Do You Need to Move Out While Your House Gets Painted?
It is one of the first questions we get asked when quoting an interior repaint in Melbourne. The short answer is no, most people do not need to move out. But there are a few things worth knowing before you book.
For Most Interior Jobs, You Can Stay Home
A standard interior repaint on a Melbourne home is not the kind of disruption that forces you out the door. Professional painters work room by room, which means the rest of your home stays functional while each space is being done. You can sleep in your bed, use your kitchen, and carry on with daily life through most of the job.
We use low VOC Dulux and Taubmans paint products on all interior work. These have significantly reduced fumes compared to older paint systems, which makes staying in the home during painting far more comfortable than it used to be. Good ventilation, opening windows and doors where possible, is all that is typically needed.
When Moving Out Makes Sense
If you are having the entire home painted in one go, walls, ceilings, trims, and doors across every room, having the house empty allows the painters to move freely without working around furniture and daily routines. The job gets done faster, and the result is often cleaner.
There are situations where temporarily staying elsewhere makes the job easier and faster for everyone.
Homes with young children or babies are worth thinking about more carefully. Even low VOC paints produce some fumes during application and drying. If you have a newborn or a toddler who spends a lot of time indoors, staying elsewhere for a night or two while freshly painted rooms cure is a sensible call.
Pet owners should also plan ahead. Cats and dogs can be stressed by the activity, the smell, and strangers in the home. They can also walk through wet paint or knock over equipment. Boarding them or arranging for them to stay elsewhere during the job avoids headaches for everyone.
What You Can Do to Prepare
Whether you are staying or going, there are a few things that make the job go smoother.
Clear the rooms being painted as much as possible. Furniture does not need to leave the house but moving it to the centre of the room and removing small items, ornaments, picture frames, and anything on shelves, makes the prep work faster and protects your belongings.
We lay drop sheets throughout the job and take care around your furniture and floors, but the less clutter in a space the better the result.
How Long Will It Take?
A single room typically takes one to two days including prep and two coats. A full interior repaint on a standard Melbourne home runs anywhere from three to seven days depending on the size, condition of the surfaces, and the scope of work. We give you a clear timeline upfront so you can plan around it.
Our Approach on Every Job
We treat your home with the same respect we would our own. Drop sheets go down before we pick up a brush. We work cleanly, communicate throughout the job, and do not leave your home in a state at the end of each day.
If you have specific concerns about timing, access, or living arrangements during your repaint, raise them when we come out to quote. We have worked around plenty of situations and we will give you an honest answer on what to expect.
